Dr. Anthony Lovell

Dr. Anthony Lovell LONGMEADOW - After receiving a diagnosis of glioblastoma in September 2006, Dr. Anthony Lovell lived his life valiantly and with appreciation for each day. He died peacefully at home on November 15, 2008. Dr. "Tony" Lovell, 68, recently retired after 35 years as a cardiologist in Springfield. He was a partner in Pioneer Valley Cardiology, which serves both Baystate and Mercy Medical Centers. Working tirelessly to provide high quality care to his patients gave Dr. Lovell tremendous personal and professional satisfaction. The son of a lobsterman, Dr. Lovell grew up on Cape Cod. He earned his tuition to college and medical school by shell fishing and working on a commercial trap boat. He attended St. Paul's School in Concord, N.H. on a scholarship arranged by his paternal grandmother who thought he should become an Episcopal minister. He received his undergraduate and medical degrees from Yale University. His training in internal medicine and cardiology took place at the University of California and the U.S. Public Health Service Hospitals in San Francisco. He completed his cardiology fellowship at Yale. Dr. Lovell was a fellow of the American College of Cardiology, and an Associate Clinical Professor at Tufts Medical School. With a life long interest in serving the community, Dr. Lovell helped initiate one of the first cardiac rehab programs in the region at the Springfield Y.M.C.A. Instrumental in founding the first Ethics Committee at Baystate Medical Center, he served as chairman during the early 1980's. Dr. Lovell was the recipient of the American Heart Association's 2005 Ralph Gianelly Award for excellence in integrity, leadership and service. Dr. Lovell was an Honorary Trustee of the Springfield Symphony Orchestra, where he served on the Board for ten years, before retiring as its President. Joining at a time when the SSO was dealing with financial challenges, he chaired the Physicians' Fund helping to coax donations from more than one hundred physicians. This was the beginning of the permanent endowment for the orchestra. He was proud to have served on the SSO search committees that brought both Mark Russell Smith and Kevin Rhodes to Springfield to lead the orchestra to ever greater heights. The Janee Armstrong Friedmann Award, was presented to Dr. Lovell in May 2008, for his long-term dedication and support for the SSO. As the Massachusetts Vice Chair of the Connecticut River Watershed Council, Tony helped energize the annual Source-to-Sea Cleanup by encouraging the participation of the Pioneer Valley Yacht Club, area rowing clubs, high school community service classes and the Hampden County Sheriff's workforce. Tony wishes to acknowledge the valuable contributions of Jonathan Moss. His enthusiastic coordination when Tony became ill, allowed this important project to continue and grow. Tony treasured the camaraderie and intellectual stimulation of a remarkable group of men who make up the Gladden Club. He was able to present his final paper in May 2008, a milestone of significant accomplishment. Tony's personal interests of traveling by bicycle, riding the London tube, x-c skiing, theater, roadside geology, sculling on the Connecticut River, expanding his collection of native woodland flowers, propagating and growing heritage vegetables and spending time at Sandy Neck on Cape Cod have made his life rich and lively. Dr.Lovell is survived by his wife of 40 years, Kathleen, his daughter Alyssa of Blandford, MA, son Andrew and daughter-in-law Stephanie of Leavenworth, WA. He leaves his sister Jean Kroeber and her husband Bernd of Huttenfeld, Germany. He was predeceased by his parents, Herbert and Valjean Lovell of Cummaquid, MA. The Lovell family would like to express their gratitude to all the staff at Baystate Medical Center and the D'Amour Cancer Center for their superb care over the last 2 years. Being able to receive the highest quality care in a medical center close to home, made a difficult situation much easier to endure. The kindness and professional competence of all the wonderful people at Baystate VNA & Hospice brought great comfort to Dr. Lovell's last days at home. In addition, the thoughtful support of family, friends, neighbors, colleagues and patients has been overwhelming and sincerely appreciated. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Anthony P. Lovell Memorial Fund at the Community Foundation of Western MA, 1500 Main Street, PO Box 15769, Springfield, MA 01115.
